LIFE IN HARARE | THE CAPITAL CITY OF ZIMBABWE
This documentary is about Harare, the capital city of Zimbabwe. It is a look into Harare from the view of my lens. Harare is where everything happens and it is the capital for a reason.
The size of Harare stands out, Mutare (3rd largest) has about 200,000 residents, Harare 2 million. Bulawayo (700,000) does not compare either, although these other cities have their own advantages. There needs to be a decentralizing process in Zimbabwe, where other cities/provinces are given autonomy. Harare should not be the center of everything. If you look at other countries, the capital is not always the center of everything. NY is the largest city and center for America, but Washington is the capital. Closer to home in South Africa, Johannesburg is the largest city and center, but Pretoria is the capital. A capital should just be for the purpose of administration.
Let me give you an example; As i mentioned I am from Mutare. We discovered diamonds there in 2006. These diamonds are found in Mutare, then transported to Harare raw for processing there. Therefore there is no job creation in Mutare, no benefit to Mutare. The normal thing should be to put a processing plant in Mutare and create employment. The people of Mutare should benefit from their own minerals but everything is shipped to Harare. This is just 1 example, Harare will only get bigger and more out of proportion with the other cities of Zimbabwe. There will be more migration countrywide towards better opportunities in Harare, which should not necessarily be the case always. There needs to be a steady balance between the all big cities and provinces.
I have lived in Harare for some time and I enjoy it. It is the simple things that get to me. Like having a braai and a drink at 10 am, even on a Monday, this would not be odd at all in Harare. I hope I represented the city well in this video. As i said, I only talk from my experience of the city. Also, as a keen environmentalist I had to put the subjects out there on how we are destroying our environment. The wetlands in Harare need saving, they are the lungs of the water system.
