Expensive Sound by Empire @derwoodguitar

In 1981, Empire released their only album Expensive Sound, with this track as the title song. Empire was Bob Derwood Andrews on guitar/vocals and Mark Laff on drums, both former members of the British punk band Generation X. Simon Bernal joined them on bass.

The album continues to be discovered, and through the years has influenced many popular musicians, as well as collected a lot of passionate fans who love the quality, originality and the heartfelt meanings to the songs.

Worth noting; all three musicians were only 20 years old at the time of recording and the engineer/producer (Michael Gregovich) was only 19!
Gregovich went on to record Page and Plant and numerous other top flight artists.

There is no known live footage of the band and very few photographs. Recently some photos have come to light taken by Paul Slattery who went on to document bands such as Joy Division, among others.

The song Expensive Sound was a tribute to motorcycles, so this video includes footage from Derwood's personal archives from England and Arizona, two places close to his heart. There is also an appearance of him playing the original Empire Fender Stratocaster guitar used on the recordings.

Bands and musicians who loved this LP include such greats as Nirvana and Dave Grohl, The Stone Roses, Ian MacKaye of Fugazi, Duff McKagan of Guns N' Roses, Henry Rollins of Black Flag, Johnny Marr of The Smiths and many more...
