Nora Ammann - Navigating Challenges in Reasoning on Artificial and Intelligent Systems and Alignment

I will discuss a handful of challenges and peculiarities that arise when reasoning about artificial (i.e. designed) and intelligent systems. In particular, I will talk about:

(1) the problem of epistemic access, i.e. how to make systematic progress on understanding systems that don’t exist yet;

(2) the problem of paradigm choice, i.e. ramifications on our research stemming from the fact that we are not just in the business of trying to understand 'what is' true (about future AI systems) but also 'what could be', and given that we, as researchers and engineers, are also affecting that which comes into being;

(3) reflections on how to do reductionism well, and its relevance to, for example, how to operationalize the notion of "alignment", or how to reach a robust understanding of the risk landscape
