General Motors New Car Previews for 1950

The auto shows hadn't gotten back into gear right after World War II. To fill the void and drum up excitement for its new cars and cars in general GM staged its own auto show at the Waldorf Astoria hotel.

These eventually became known as the Motoramas. In 1950, radio and TV personality, Arthur Godfrey, hosted a tour of the displays of new Chevrolets, Buicks, Cadillacs and his sponsor's, Pontiacs. Along the way he bumped into GM President, Charles Erwin Wilson, or C. E. Wilson who would soon be tapped by Eisenhower to become Secretary of Defense. He also talked to the legendary auto pioneer Charles "Boss" Kettering who had invented the electric self starter for GM. The device, along with cheap oil, sealed the fate of the electric car.
