Running Away to Join the Circus and Finding Out It’s Racist | My Story and Aerial Rope Act About It

I ran away to join the circus - a community that is known for welcoming EVERYONE…and found racist hiring practices instead. I am sharing with you my story and experience about racism within the circus industry from a POC perspective. I am also sharing with you my full aerial rope act that was created (September 2019) as a response to those who told me my skin was too dark, my body type is not right, and that I would never become a circus performer.

I thank the training studios that I’ve been a part of/been to that welcome people of all backgrounds, the coaches that invested in me, and the companies/individuals that gave me and other BIPOC a chance to show what we got. From my perspective, it is because of you that BIPOC are able to continue to push the boundaries that most people cannot see.

This act is dedicated to every person who has ever had a big dream and felt like they could not achieve it. This act is a response to those who told me my skin was too dark, my body type is not right, and that I would never become a circus performer.
