👅 Visit to a 'Speaking in Tongues' Pentecostal Church

By request, this week attended a flagship church of Oneness Pentecostalism. Basically, what happens at a church that speaks in tongues?

Oneness Pentecostalism has a stark differentiating factor than typical Protestantism, as it believes God is one - but He manifests as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - not the same 3-in-1 as typically accepted with the Trinity.

Service begins with contemporary Christian music ("Waymaker" was the most popular and longest of the selections). A number of people came up towards the front to raise hands in praise.

The executive pastor got up at one point to talk about the importance of tithing to help the church (citing Malachai 3:10, which seems to be commonly used in this and other church tithe talks). He briefly built up his talk and spoke in tongues for a few seconds and then halted.

Then came music and prayer, with numerous people coming up front as elders didn't just pray with people, elders would lay hands on foreheads. One man up front seemingly shaked when his forehead would be touched.

The senior pastor delivered a passionate sermon that started with that horse drawing meme. God has everything perfect for us, then we take the pen and mess it all up. He talked about believers settle for the bad table as opposed to the good table God has provided. He ended it by disassembling the bad table and throwing down the chairs.

Service ended with the entire congregation speaking in tongues or praying with more music. Heard the lady behind constantly repeating, "Thank you Jesus."

After service, learned I was sitting in front of the pastor's assistant. She was great, and eventually introduced me to the senior pastor (despite 1,000 people in attendance). Also made some new friends, with one elder offering to give a tour with their baptism font high above the stage.

Heading in, I had reservations (since the Pentecost Church I attended in the first 52in52 was negative). This was different, though an entire congregation speaking in tongues was very strange to observe up close. That said, this was one of the friendliest churches I've ever come across.
