We already made a video about the worst prologues in gaming so let’s take a look games that actually have great beginnings. The games in this video all started off with a bang. They immediately peaked our interest with amazing gameplay, stunning set pieces or great storytelling. Here is our top 10 greatest opening levels in gaming!

10. Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare started off with an absolute blast. Following Captain Price and a team of SAS commandos onto a ship made clear that this Call of Duty was going to be awesome. It’s a groundbreaking cinematic experience thanks to great motion capture and a great soundtrack.

9. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Just like the opening of a good Bond movie Uncharted 2 throws players right into the action. Getting out of a train carriage that could fall at any second certainly grabbed our attention. How the hell did Drake get himself in this dangerous position in the first place? Uncharted 2 hooked us in from the start and also immediately showed the great graphical leap it made over the original. What a great start to one of the best games of the last generation.

8. Sonic The Hedgehog
Sonic The Hedgehog has one of the best opening levels in gaming. Green Hill Zone immediately sets the tone and gets the message across that this game is all about speed. The bright colorful look of the level and great music really shows off the best parts of the Sonic universe.

7. God Of War III
God of War always starts off with an epic set piece and the opening of God of War 3 has to be the greatest one of them all. You're ripping beasts apart in a truly jaw-dropping setting. The many bosses are great to fight too and the sense of scale is amazing.

6. Resident Evil 4
We can’t even count the number of times we completed Resident Evil 4 over the years. We played pretty much every remaster and special edition of this brilliant game. The fact that it starts off in such an awesome way makes it so tempting to start a new playthrough. The village is a rollercoaster of emotions as you frantically try to survive a huge horde of infected farmers. And all bets are off when you hear a chainsaw revving up. We also love the sense of relief you feel when you finally make it out alive.

5. Half-Life 2
We’ll never forget our first few steps in City 17. The brilliant beginning of Half-Life 2 does a great job of delivering lots of atmosphere and story. You can really feel the oppression in this unknown Eastern European country. Half-Life 2 makes it clear from the get-go that something is very wrong.

4. The Last Of Us
The opening level of The Last Of Us kicks you right in the feels. It starts off slow and keeps on escalating until you are part of a massive zombie apocalypse. Seeing the chaos pop off around puts Hollywood zombie movies to shame. The real shock comes when your daughter suddenly gets hit by a bullet.
3. Metal Gear Solid
The opening of Metal Gear Solid got us hyped from the very first minute. The cinematic camera angles and great musical score impressed us a lot back in 1998. The Dock section is also one of the most enjoyable areas to explore. It’s a small sandbox that serves as a training area to get you to grips with the combat, movement and controls.

2. BioShock
Welcome to Rapture. The opening level of Bioshock immediately lets you know that you’re in for something special. The first thirty minutes of this game are incredibly memorable due to the beautifully unique visual style. The amazing art direction and incredible soundtrack with great voice-over work really pulls you in. The amount of atmosphere this game throws at you right from the start is ridiculous. Bioshock presents an underwater world you can’t wait to discover.

1. Super Mario Bros.
Has there ever been a more iconic opening level in gaming than world 1-1 of Super Mario Bros. The first level is a masterclass in game design. Everything you need to know about Super Mario Bros. is contained within the first few screens of the game. Mushrooms make you grow big, goombas are bad and falling kills you.
