Is it gender equality or gender equity?! What’s the difference? We got you.

They look similar, sound similar and are often used interchangeably. Yes… we’re guilty of doing it at times too. But gender equity and gender equality are different concepts and the distinction is important.

Think of gender equality as men and women getting the same resources and opporutunies, regardless of if it right for them or if it is even needed.

Gender equity is where everyone gets what they need to reach an equal outcome, recognizing and accounting for the different circumstances, conditions and barriers that girls and women face.

Gender equity sets the stage for equality and it is why #UnicornIslandFund is focused on gender equity-based solutions. A focus on equity bridges the gaps in equality through resources, services, programs and policies that level the playing field and works to change the culture to be more supportive of girls and women.

And as we say… when we change the culture, we can change the world.
