Spotted lanternflies are spreading. A bipartisan bill aims to fight back

Spotted lanternflies are back—and now lawmakers are taking another step to slow their spread. The invasive insects have returned, bringing their talent for hitching rides on cars, firewood and outdoor furniture with them.

The spotted lanternflies can damage crops, trees and other plants, and studies cited by Sen. John Fetterman’s office estimate they could cost Pennsylvania’s economy as much as $324 million a year if their spread is not contained.

A new bipartisan bill would make spotted lanternfly research a federal priority as officials look for better ways to control their spread.
