Kabaddi and Ethnic Integration in Hong Kong | Wyman Tang | TEDxYCISHK

People of different ethnic backgrounds are often said to be living in a parallel world in Hong Kong. They live in the same neighborhood but may never come across one another. Wyman Tang's project is to build a sports platform and bring people together, and the sport chosen in his project is kabaddi, a traditional South Asian sport. Kabaddi in the Tamil language means holding hands, and is a team sport that only needs simple equipment. The rules are simple; it is a game easy to learn and enjoyable to watch. In India, it is known as a game of the masses. Yet, we have added new social meanings to this sport in Hong Kong, augmenting the original spirit of this game – holding hands! Wai-man Tang received his PhD in anthropology from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2013. His current research is on South Asian sports, kabaddi, with the focus on two aspects: the cultural politics of worlding kabaddi, and kabaddi as a tool for intercultural education in Hong Kong. He engages people of different ethnic backgrounds in this sport and investigates the impact of this sport on the intercultural competence of the participants. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
