Standing on 6,000 Years of History: Nebet Tepe, Plovdiv 🇧🇬⛰️

Climb to the very top of Plovdiv, Bulgaria, and step onto the birthplace of one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in all of Europe. Welcome to Nebet Tepe.

This ancient hilltop fortress crowns the highest point of Plovdiv’s Old Town, and the history beneath your feet is mind-blowing. Archaeologists have uncovered traces of human settlement here dating back more than 6,000 years, beginning with the ancient Thracians who first fortified the hill in the 4th millennium BC.

As you wander through the newly restored archaeological complex, you can trace the rise and fall of great empires just by looking at the stone layers. You'll see massive, mortarless Thracian cyclopean masonry, Hellenistic walls expanded by Philip II of Macedon (Alexander the Great's father), high-capacity Roman brick-and-stone water reservoirs, and a secret Byzantine stone tunnel (postern) built during the reign of Emperor Justinian.

But Nebet Tepe isn't just an open-air historical goldmine—it's also the ultimate panoramic viewpoint in the region. Looking out from the rugged edge of the ruins, you get a spectacular, unobstructed view of Plovdiv sprawling below, the winding Maritsa River, and the dramatic silhouettes of the distant Rhodope Mountains. It is the absolute best spot in the city to catch a sunset.
