How Chessplayers helped Crack Enigma and Win WW2 w/ James Grime & GingerGM

Hugh Alexander was a chess champion, code-breaker and WW2 hero, who along with the likes of Alan Turing and fellow chess players Harry Golombek and Stuart Milner-Berry worked at Bletchley Park to break the German Enigma code. Their success in this endeavour turned the tide of the war and saved millions of lives. Hugh Alexander was a very strong player and even managed to beat later world champion Mikhail Botvinnik in a radio match. Chess experts rate Hugh Alexander very highly and had he not been prevented from pursuing his chess by the outbreak of WW2, it is likely that he would have reached the highest echelons in the chess world.

We owe a big THANK YOU to Bletchley Park for helping us in making this video about Hugh Alexander, his work and chess. The good folk at Bletchley Park museum helped us in our research, gave us the required filming permissions and even provided some of the footage you can see in the video.

In Outray Chess our mission is to show how fun, historical, sexy and awesome chess really is. It is our belief that the many, albeit excellent, chess commentators are somehow doing the great game a disservice by only focusing on the dry, game-theoretical aspect. Chess is full of crazy, interesting, inspiring and brilliant people, it has an extremely rich history that spands more than 2000 years and it can be enjoyed by everyone. There is nothing quite like chess and we want to share our love and passion with you and the world.

In this pursuit we have created crazy chess videos (like when we drove a tank to show the brilliance of the Magician from Riga), made chess events (like when we turned a 3-story night club into a chess madhouse) and hosted crazy chess streams (like when we streamed with GingerGM and Anna Rudolf in front of 100 people). We wish to continue to expand, create more videos, events and streams and if you wish to support our cause, subscribe to the channel, drop a comment and follow us on social media.

Who are we?
Mathis and Rune are childhood friends who now work in the film industry in Copenhagen, Denmark. We spend our free time creating the chess content we can’t get anywhere else, often enjoying a beer in the proces.

Note: At 04:48 James says that the code-breakers played chess in Hut 4 outside the window. The historians at Bletchley Park has corrected us, saying that it is actually not known exactly where the code-breakers played chess.

Other credits:
The video also contains clips from the 2014 film The Imitation Game starring Matthew Goode as Hugh Alexander and Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing. We use these short clips under “fair use”, as this content is educational in nature.
