2007: The Day America Accidentally Lost Nuclear Weapons

In August 2007, a major nuclear security incident occurred within the U.S. military involving live nuclear warheads.
At Minot Air Force Base, several nuclear-armed cruise missiles were mistakenly loaded onto a Boeing B-52 Stratofortress.
The bomber then flew to Barksdale Air Force Base carrying the live warheads.
Shockingly, the weapons were not properly accounted for during the flight.
For approximately 36 hours, military personnel were unaware that operational nuclear weapons had been mistakenly transported across the country.
The incident was eventually discovered during inspections after the aircraft landed.
Investigations later revealed failures in security procedures, communication, and oversight.
The event became one of the most serious nuclear handling mistakes in modern U.S. military history and raised concerns about the safety and control of nuclear arsenals even decades after the Cold War.
