Highland Cathedral #SolsticeSunday

"Highland Cathedral" performed at the Ring of Brodgar Stone Circle for this #SolsticeSunday for #SlowAirSunday On our Scotland trip back in 2017 we had the moment to travel up to the Ring of Brodgar in the Northern Island of Orkney. This place was very beautiful. This is the second Stone circle I have been blessed to play my Pipes. Each place has felt completely different and special in it's own way. Almost like each circle carries its own personality and feeling. The wind, the day we went, was blustery and intense making Bagpiping at the stones difficult and very cold. I tried to tune and strike my pipes in outside of the circle with no luck. The wind would sweep up and knock my drones out as fast as I would strike them in. It wasn't til a gentleman walked out from the middle of the stones, where he was meditating, to ask me to come into the inner circle to play. Leading my husband and I to the center, I doubted that I would be able to play. Once in the center, to my joyful surprise, I went to strike in the pipes and immediately they performed. I also noticed that the temperature in the center of the circle was warmer. Playing here was completely different than my last experience playing at the Callanais Stones.

About the Stones:
Because the interior of the Ring of Brodgar has never been fully excavated, or scientifically dated, the monument's actual age remains uncertain. However, it is generally assumed to have been erected between 2500 BC and 2000 BC, and was, therefore, the last of the great Neolithic monuments built on the Ness. The stone ring was built in a true circle, almost 104 metres wide. Although it is thought to have originally contained 60 megaliths, this figure is not based on archaeological evidence. Today, only 27 stones remain. The Ring of Brodgar takes its name from the nearby farm and derives from the Old Norse brúar-garðr, meaning bridge farm. In common with Maeshowe, a short distance away, sometime in the 12th century, a Norse visitor carved graffiti into one of the circle's stones. The stone in question (the third stone to the north of the present-day entrance) is now a broken stump, but the runic graffiti remains clearly visible. During New New Year celebrations of yesteryear, lovers would visit Brodgar where the man would fall to his knees and "pray to the god Wodden" that the couple keep the oaths they were about to swear. They then made their way to the Odin Stone where the oath ceremony took place.

Lyrics to the tune:

There is a land far from this distant shore
Where heather grows and Highland eagles soar
There is a land that will live ever more
Deep in my heart, my Bonnie Scotland
Though I serve so far away
I still see your streams, cities and dreams
I can't wait until the day
When I'll come home once more
And so Lord keep me from the harm of war
Through all its dangers and the battle's roar
Keep me safe until I'm home once more
Home to my own in Bonnie Scotland

VERSE 1.
Land of our fathers, we will always be
Faithful and loyal to our own country.
In times of danger, we will set you free.
Lead you to glory and to victory.

VERSE 2.
Hail, Caledonia, to our ancient prayer.
Joining, together, with one dream to share.
God bless the people of this land so fair.

CHORUS
Gone is the past, let us start anew.
Let this hope of peace, always remain.
Spirit of Scotia, be strong and true.
Then your children will smile again, again, again, again.

VERSE 3.
Rise, Caledonia, let your voices ring
In this Highland Cathedral of our God and King.
Whom, joy and liberty, to all, will bring.
Come; let your heart, with love and courage, sing.

CHORUS
Lonely the exile, o'er distant seas,
The home of their birth, gone from their eyes.
Bring back their souls o'er the ocean breeze
To the land where their fathers lie.
