MASSIVE Asteroid Alert: 3 Asteroids Are Passing Closer Than the Moon
Space is getting dangerously crowded this week. As of May 14, 2026, NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) has confirmed that a newly discovered space rock, Asteroid 2026 JH2, is heading for one of the closest flybys in recent history. On Monday, May 18, this "Apollo-class" asteroid—roughly the size of a large school bus (16–35 meters)—will streak past us at a distance of just 91,000 kilometers (56,500 miles). To put that in perspective, it’s passing at just 24% of the distance to the Moon.
We analyze why the Mount Lemmon Survey only spotted this rock on May 10th and whether its trajectory poses a risk to our GPS and communication satellites. From the "Chelyabinsk" comparison to the Virtual Telescope Project’s live tracking, here is everything you need to know about the May 18th near-miss.
[Inside the Near-Miss]
The 24% Gap: Why 2026 JH2 is passing well inside the lunar orbit (384,400km).
The Discovery Gap: How a bus-sized asteroid evaded detection until 8 days before its closest approach.
Satellite Danger Zone: Is the rock passing through the geosynchronous satellite belt?
Impact Physics: What would happen if a 35-meter rock hit the atmosphere? (The airburst explained).
3. Key Highlights: The May 14 Space Intel
Discovery Date: Identified by the Mount Lemmon Survey on May 10, 2026, and confirmed by the Farpoint Observatory.
Closest Approach: 21:23 UTC on May 18, 2026.
The "Bus" Scale: Estimated at 50 to 115 feet wide, similar in scale to the 2013 Chelyabinsk meteor.
Safe but Close: NASA/JPL confirms zero impact risk, but labels it an "extremely close encounter" in astronomical terms.
Live Tracking: Peak brightness will hit magnitude 11.5, making it visible through modest amateur telescopes in the constellations Ursa Major and Leo.

Disclaimer: This analysis is based on orbital data from NASA JPL and The Minor Planet Center as of May 14, 2026. Current calculations show zero probability of Earth impact for 2026 JH2. Orbital trajectories are constantly refined; follow official NASA Space Alerts for real-time updates.
