Dialogic Dog | Cincinnati Children's
Description:
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends reading with children as often as possible. Benefits include stronger relationships, healthy brain development, improved skills and success in school.
While how often you read is important, research shows that the quality of interaction during stories – especially talking and imagination - may be most important of all.
Dialogic Reading is a science-based approach developed by experts to help make reading together more fun and interactive. It sounds complicated, but it’s not – it’s fun! It’s all about encouraging talking - or dialogue - which is where the term comes from.
This video shows how it works.
Dialogic Reading uses types of prompts (questions) and responses, represented by PEER/CROWD. PEER stands for: 1) Prompt the child with a question, 2) Evaluate the response in a supportive way, 3) Expand on the response to add information or spice, 4) Repeat the expanded response, and invite the child to, as well.
CROWD stands for 5 types of questions: 1) Completion of a sentence, 2) Recall something from earlier in the story, 3) Open-ended questions (ones with no “right” answer), 4) Wh- questions (which do have right answers, e.g. “What’s that?”), 5) Distancing, or relating the story to the child’s life.
You can use dialogic reading with any kind of book. Benefits include improved language skills, story understanding, attention, empathy, brain development, and relationships, which increase the more that you read!
After watching this video, try dialogic reading with a child in your life – have fun!
