Our midshipmen in ES281C Intro to Drone Technology (aka "School of Drones") put together this video of some of what they've been working on this term. The class was aimed at underclass and had midshipmen build and fly quadrotors (FliteTest Gremlin) and learn about the hardware, from basic aerodynamics to motors to flight controllers, radios, video, and autopilots. Midshipmen also got to train on other platforms (Blade Inductrix, Vortex 250, Vortex 150, F450, Mavic). Mids were drawn from several departments (Robotics & Control Engineering; Aero; Mech E; English), many with no radio control experience at all. The experiences gained by these mids are already being put into practice in other projects across the department, including SWAT-C, SUAS, and support for capstones; we'll also be encouraging continued involvement through the USNA student chapter of the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA), including a Drone Racing League.
