Who Were the Existentialists? What Was It All About?
In this invited lecture at the Wauwatosa Public Library, I discuss the 19th and 20th century philosophical and literary movement of Existentialism.
I distinguish between several different phases of development of the movement - a first phase, running through the 1800s - a second phase running from 1900 through the 1930s - a third phase running from the late 1930s to about 1960 - a fourth phase running through the 1960s into the 1980s.
I also discuss some of the main themes grappled with by the existentialists, who the main figures were and how they figured into the movement, and the controversies over the very meaning itself of existentialism.
