Violent clashes erupted outside the National Congress on Wednesday as Argentine security forces used tear gas and batons to disperse thousands of demonstrators protesting controversial reforms to the country’s landmark "Glacier Law." The reform, promoted by President Javier Milei’s administration and passed by the Chamber of Deputies early Thursday, narrows the scope of protected areas to favor large-scale mining investments in copper and lithium. Environmental activists from the Eco-Socialist Network and neighborhood groups accused the government of "plunder," warning that the changes endanger freshwater reserves supplying over seven million people. At least one person was detained during the skirmishes at the intersection of Avenida de Mayo and 9 de Julio, while protesters, many dressed as glaciers or holding water-drop placards, vowed to challenge the "unconstitutional" law in court to prevent multinational mining companies from operating in sensitive periglacial zones.
