Canada Jays | Garibaldi Provincial Park

Canada jays (Perisoreus canadensis) watching me carefully as I made my way to the Elfin Lakes Shelter in Garibaldi Provincial Park on an overnight winter outing I did several years back. Canada jays can be found throughout Canada and, to a lesser degree, they are found in many western states. They also go by the names of gray jays and whiskey jacks. In 2018, the American Ornithologists' Union officially made Canada jay the common name of the species, following their 1957 decision to make the official name gray jay. In 2016, Canada Jays became the official bird of Canada.

For more information on the Canada jay, watch Lesley the Bird Nerd's wonderful video on this mischievous species.

It's a bit morbid, but here's some Canada jays feeding on a carcass. Magpies were also there, but they were bothered by the camera and tripod set up to record this. The Canada jays had no such concerns!
