Frigid Night at Stone Memorial Shelter, Harriman State Park, NY

The Stone Memorial Shelter in Harriman State Park is a historic three-sided lean-to located near the summit of Horse Stable Mountain along the Suffern-Bear Mountain Trail. Built in 1935, it honors Edgar and Jessie Stone, founders of the Tramp and Trail Club of New York. The shelter is made of boulders, features a sleeping platform, and originally had a fireplace (now sealed) in its central column.

It accommodates around eight people and operates on a first-come, first-serve basis. Tent camping is allowed within 300 feet if the shelter is occupied. Fires are permitted only in established fire rings, and bear hangs are available for food storage. The hike to the shelter typically involves a 2-2.5 mile trek with an elevation gain of about 600 feet, depending on the trail chosen.
