During the pledge of allegiance or the national anthem, Americans put their hands ‘over their hearts’. This isn’t just in the US too - people around the world automatically put their right hand over the left side of their chest - just under the shoulder, and level with the armpit.... because that's where the heart is right?
Not quite.
You’re actually covering your left lung there, not your heart. Despite what you see depicted on TV and in the media, your heart isn’t quite where they say it is...
In this video, we go over:
- where the heart actually is in your body
- why you still feel your heartbeat on the left side of your chest
- chambers of the heart (atria and ventricles)
- systemic circulation and pulmonary circulation
- why the heart ended up where it is
- why the heart isn't symmetrical (left atrium is larger)
- why the lungs aren't symmetrical (left lung is smaller)
- Dextrocardia (heart on the right side)
- Situs Inversus or Oppositus (major visceral organs reversed or mirrored)
- Pentalogy of Cantrell with Ectopia Cordis (heart outside the chest wall)
...and Enrique Iglesias!
