The Hidden Geometry Behind Hypothesis Testing
Open any statistics textbook and you'll find the t-statistic formula. You plug in numbers, get a p-value, move on. But almost nobody asks where this number actually lives — what it's measuring, geometrically. It turns out the t-statistic isn't really a number at all. It's an angle.
We build the picture from scratch: the data as a single vector in n-dimensional space, the null hypothesis as a direction, and the split into a signal projection and perpendicular noise. From there, the t-statistic falls out as the tangent of the angle between your data and the noise plane, the p-value becomes the surface area of a cone, and the t-distribution stops being a magic table. By the end, t-test, ANOVA, and linear regression all collapse into one picture — a null subspace, a data vector, and a single angle.
