Entangled Decolonization
Entangled Decolonization: Navigating Eurasia's Authoritarianism, Media, and Governance in a Connected World
The economic sanctions and political stigmatization of Russia following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022 marked a seeming turning point in the West’s policy towards the region. Globalization had failed to constrain Russian aggression and its economic decoupling from the West would exert severe costs on the Kremlin. However, many of the transnational networks that had long sustained Russian and Eurasian authoritarian governance and kleptocracy remain active. This lecture will explore these Eurasian extraterritorial influence and practices, as well as the Western actors, institutions and practices that sustain and contest them.
This event is the keynote lecture for the Centre for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies International Graduate Student Conference.
