Walter Bonatti è stato un grande alpinista, capace di vincere grandi sfide alpinistiche: K2, Dru, G4, Cervino, solo per citare alcuni nomi. Ma le vette raggiunte non sono punti di arrivo, sono tappe intermedie che lo spingono poi verso un viaggio in giro per il mondo, alla ricerca di se stesso. La sua esplorazione, partita dalle pareti verticali, è passata poi all'itinerario orizzontale e si è espressa sempre verso lo spazio interiore dove risiedono le nostre paure e i nostri desideri. Dove l'uomo, seduto solo davanti a se stesso, deve decidere se superarsi o adeguarsi. E Walter non si è mai adeguato, ha scritto le sue regole e ha tenuto fede a queste per tutta la vita, non concedendosi vie di fuga o scorciatoie. Si è costruito come alpinista, come esploratore, come fotoreporter e come scrittore, ma sempre e solo con l'intento di essere un uomo. Il documentario parla di questo viaggio, ricostruendo la biografia professionale, ma soprattutto umana, di chi con le mani, con i muscoli, con il cuore, con la testa, ha lottato per essere se stesso senza compromessi.

Walter Bonatti was a great climber, capable of achieving major climbing challenges: K2, Dru, G4, Cervino to name but a few. However, the summits reached were not points of arrival, but rather intermediate stages driving him to travel throughout the world in search of personal fulfilment. His exploration started from vertical walls, to then move on towards horizontal itineraries and was also directed towards the inner space where our fears and desires lie, where man comes face to face with himself and must decide whether to surpass himself or conform. Walter never conformed, he wrote his own rules and abided by them for the whole of his life, never taking escape routes or short cuts. He created a life as a climber, an explorer, a photojournalist and a writer, but always with the exclusive intention of fulfilling himself as a man. The documentary is dedicated to his journey, reconstructing a professional, but above all human biography of a man who fought to be himself without compromises, using his hands, muscles, heart and mind.
