Live: PM Boris Johnson opens debates and votes on Brexit Internal Market Bill

Boris Johnson will take centre stage when he opens this afternoon’s debate on the controversial new bill, in a bid to head off a growing Tory rebellion.

The Prime Minister is a last-minute addition to the billing, replacing Alok Sharma, the Business Secretary, who had been expected to introduce the Internal Market Bill for the Government. Mr Johnson has cancelled a planned visit this morning to take part in the debate.

Britain's parliament debates and votes upon the Internal Market Bill, legislation which has plunged Brexit talks into chaos and threatens a rebellion within Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Conservative Party.

The debate is on the principle of the bill and may include attempts to amend it. Decision on amendments and the law's progression to the next stage of approval is expected to be subject to votes.

DAVID Cameron has become the THIRD Conservative former PM to condemn Boris Johnson's plan to redraft the Brexit divorce bill.

Cameron said he had 'misgivings' about the idea, adding that passing a law “and then going on to break an international treaty obligation is the very, very last thing you should contemplate”.

He joined former PMs Theresa May, John Major and Labour's Tony Blair in questioning Boris' bid to override the UK's Brexit withdrawal deal.

Today Johnson faces rebellion over plans to change the Brexit treaty, during a vote in parliament.

The House of Commons will debate the Internal Market Bill which former Attorney General Geoffrey Cox has also slammed.

Mr Cox said: “Breaking of the law leads ultimately to very long-term and permanent damage to this country's reputation and it is also a question of honour.”
