🤯Most of the dinosaur fossils displayed in museums are not real fossils🤯
If you see dinosaur bones that are out in the open and aren't behind a glass case, chances are they are fake bones. But why would a museum put fake bones on display? Because fossils are EXTREMELY fragile.
The process of turning a bone into a rock makes the structure of the fossil very brittle and weak. Paleontologists have to be very careful when they excavate fossils so they don't break them. When paleontologists dig them out of the ground, we usually have to coat these fossils and the surrounding rock in what is essentially super glue. From there we wrap them carefully with several layers of toilet paper to add a soft cushion layer. And finally we add a plaster layer over this, which is similar to a cast you get when you break your arm or leg. All of this combined it meant to keep these delicate fossils from breaking as they are moved around.
Once they're back at the museum, it can take several months to carefully chip away at the surrounding rocks without breaking the fossil. And at this point, even with it being covered in laboratory grade glue, fossils can easily break. With some of these dinosaur fossils literally being the only record of a dinosaur species to be found, it would
Paleontologists did use to mount the real bones in museums. But they began to fall apart. In the North Carolina Natural science museum, for example, the Acrocanthosaurus skeleton developed pyrite crystals inside the bones due to the humidity, which then caused the skeleton to fall apart. So in order to show off the fossils we find in the field, we make molds of the bones in order to cast a replica. Not only are these casts much more durable, they're lighter too, which makes it easier to pose a whole skeleton. This way the fossils can stay in tact and the public can see the dinosaur up close.
