Glazing the Ceramics I Small Slab Box Exercise: Dipping, Pouring, Brushing, and Bulb Slip Trailing

This video is preparing my Ceramics I kids to glaze their small slab-box exercise. This is only the second time they will be using our stoneware glazes in the semester. These boxes are an exercise for my Ceramics I kids, where they learn the basics of slab building with tar paper before they move on to their larger firm slab projects.

I demonstrate to my students how they can Pour, Dip, Brush, or Bulb Syringe their designs on their slab boxes. The idea is they can experiment on these small boxes and try out their glaze technique they will use on their big piece before they glaze it.

For more detail on the Bulb syringe method, please check out the glazing the plate video here: https://youtu.be/vmuNLto2p7Y

In this video, we are glazing the bisque fired boxes. We use stoneware glazes (cone 5 and 6 midfire) on our Standard 153 stoneware, a nice midrange firing stoneware. I used underglazes in the carved design grooves of the boxes to keep the stoneware glazes separate when they fire.

I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 28 years, the past 20 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; https://www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsAndGlass

I started my Youtube channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!

Subscribe to my channel if you would like to receive channel updates, or would like to learn more about clay and studio processes!
