Wildebeest Birth at the Columbus Zoo

May 30, 2017 was a very special day at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium! That morning, the first wildebeest calf ever born at the facility was welcomed by mom, Becky, and other herd members in the Heart of Africa savanna. While keepers were observing the wildebeest nearby to make sure the process went smoothly and everyone was healthy, staff was also able to document the special moment on camera, which will help serve as an educational tool for animal care providers and others in the future. The pairing of wildebeest mom, Becky, and dad, Doug, was recommended by The Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan® for this species, which faces threats of habitat loss within their migration passages. Please note: This video does include the birth. We hope that you will join us in celebrating this significant moment for the Zoo, the keepers, and certainly the future of this amazing species!
