How can we raise our children to resist the constraints of gender scripts? The history of the tomboy gives us a glimpse into the gender parameters operating in society. Tomboys have always been gender rebels, but does the recent popularity of tomboy fashion erode that rebellious history or take girl power mainstream? Dr. Jamie Skerski teaches communication and gender at the University of Colorado Boulder. Her research on tomboys reveals the gender norms limiting the potential of girls.
