What Happens If You Use a Compressor WRONG? Meet Negative Compression
ChatGPT introduced me to a strange technique I've dubbed negative compression, and it turns out it has a lot of cool sound design possibilities for mixing ambient music. While it's not very good at taming dynamics, it can be great for creating unique sound effects. And the best part is you can do it using only free plugins!
Songs featured in this video:
Mike Nigro - II: Out of Time https://mikenigro.bandcamp.com/album/leaving-returning
OVRSCN - Survival Screening https://overscan.bandcamp.com/album/dirac-sea
Plugins mentioned in this video:
TDR Nova: https://www.tokyodawn.net/tdr-nova/
TDR Kotelnikov: https://www.tokyodawn.net/tdr-kotelnikov/

NEGATIVE COMPRESSION INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Duplicate your audio track.
You’ll be working with two identical versions — one original, one to process.
2. Apply heavy compression to the duplicate.
Fast attack, medium release, and high ratio (10:1 or more).
Set the threshold low enough to really clamp down on the loud parts.
The goal is to flatten peaks and leave only the quieter content.
3. Flip the phase (polarity) of the compressed track.
Most DAWs have a phase invert switch on the mixer or utility plugin.
If you use a stereo one such as in Ableton, remember to flip both the left and right channels.
4. Blend the inverted, compressed track back in with the original.
Start with the compressed track turned all the way down.
As you bring up the level of the inverted track, you'll hear the quieter parts fade away while the louder parts stay - until you get closer to -15 or so dB and above, where it will start getting weird!
