Barely a day after Gotabaya Rajapaksa was sworn in as Sri Lankan President , External Affairs Minister S.Jaishankar flew in to Colombo to meet him and to invite him to India. The move reflects the importance New Delhi attaches to having close ties with the new government in Sri Lanka. Gotabaya has accepted Jaishankar’s invite and is set to visit New Delhi on November 29 in what will be his first foreign visit as his country’s president. The swift outreach is also being perceived as India’s move to counter Beijing’s growing influence in the island nation. On 'Our Take', SNI Editor-in-Chief Nitin Gokhale and Deputy Editor Parul Chandra discuss the reasons for Gotabaya’s electoral victory and his evolution as a politician. Gokhale explains why the Rajapaksas--Gotabaya and his elder brother Mahinda who is a former Sri Lankan President and has now been appointed Prime Minister--leaned towards China in the past but that they’re willing to work with the Indian government now.
