Cargo Ship Sinks at Kochi Coastline, Kerala

A Liberian-flagged container ship, MSC Elsa 3, sank off the coast of Kochi in the Arabian Sea on May 25, 2025, while en route from Vizhinjam to Kochi. The vessel was carrying 640 containers, including 13 with hazardous cargo and a significant amount of fuel oil. All 24 crew members were rescued. The sinking led to concerns about potential oil spills and the drifting of hazardous materials towards the Kerala coast, prompting the state government to issue a high alert and classify the incident as a state-specific disaster. Preliminary investigations suggest a mechanical failure in the ballast tank as a possible cause for the sinking.
