Band of the Grenadier Guards - St James's Palace - 20 April 2015

Just two weeks back on Public Duties for the summer season, from Winter Guard Order (grey greatcoats) to Summer Guard Order (scarlet tunics), the Band of the Grenadier Guards accompanies the Old Guard, St James's Palace Detachment, on this day found by F Company Scots Guards, to Buckingham Palace for Changing The Queen's Guard.

Changing The Queen's Guard at Buckingham Palace Forecourt commences at 11:30am, every day from April to August, and every second day for the rest of the year. The ceremony is the change of the Old Guard (previous 24 or 48 hour Guard Mount) with the New Guard (next 24 or 48 hour Guard Mount). The ceremony combines the guard change of two of the Queen's Households; Buckingham Palace and St James's Palace which is located about 600 metres to the east of Buckingham Palace. Each Palace has a Detachment of Guards from a Regiment of the Household Division.

At around 11:00am the Old Guard, St James's Palace Detachment, begins to assemble on Friary Court, St James's Palace. They are accompanied by a Band or Corps of Drums and march off by 11:15am. The schedule of Guards and Bands is published monthly on the British Army/Ceremonial website however it can be subject to late change. The bearskin-capped, scarlet-tunic Foot Guards of the Household Division (Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish and Welsh Guards), plus dismounted bands of the Horse Guards of the Household Division (Life Guards and the Blues and Royals) are rotated depending on availability for these Public Duties. If commitments prevent a full compliment of representation by these Regiments, other regiments are invited to participate, and occasionally foreign regiments of the Commonwealth can be seen as either the Guard or Band or both.

As with the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards, and the 2nd Battalion Coldstream Guards, the 2nd Battalion Scots Guards was placed in Suspended Animation in 1991. At that time, F Company Scots Guards was created to continue the tradition and honour of the 2nd Battalion and as such, carries The Colour (flag) of the 2nd Battalion Scots Guards. Each Regiment (each 1st and 2nd Battalion for the Grenadier, Coldstream and Scots Guards) has two Colours. The Queen's Colour, a predominantly red flag with the Union flag in the corner, is carried when the Queen is in residence. The Regimental Colour, the Union flag with superimposed devices as seen in this clip, is carried on other occasions. For centuries The Colours of a regiment have carried great significance and were a beacon and rallying point in the haze of battle. They are the essence of the Trooping Of The Colour Ceremony ("Queen's Birthday Parade") held in June each year, They have been traditionally protected by Drummers who also gave the signals of battle in times when no other communication devices existed (bugles came later). As such, a Drummer is still appointed to protect The Colour and can be seen marching immediately behind the Band and carrying a Colour Case which is used to house The Colour should inclement weather develop.
