Transformer Travels from Netherlands to Morocco Substaton in Michigan

After a three-month journey that began in the Netherlands, a 209-ton electric transformer recently arrived at ITC’s Morocco substation site under construction in Lenawee County, Mich. Traveling first by barge and then by railcar from the Atlantic coast to Michigan, the transformer was transferred to a 14-axle truck for the last leg of its journey, shown in this time-lapse video. Targeted for completion later this year, the Morocco substation will provide a more stable and reliable source of energy for the area upon the scheduled suspension of the Whiting coal-fired generation station in Monroe County in April 2016. The substation will connect the existing local 138,000-volt (138kV) system to a 345,000-volt (345kV) line. The substation transformer will step the voltage down from 345kV to 138kV to serve the local system.
