Why Ghana Is Building The $1BN Pwalugu Multi Purpose Dam

In this video, we'll present a comprehensive review about Ghana's $1 billion Pwalugu Multi Purpose Dam project currently under construction. The construction of the Pwalugu multi-purpose dam, speculated to be the first ever hydro-solar hybrid system in Ghana officially commenced after the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo Addo cut sod for the project earlier this year. Its inauguration had been hindered for months by certain key members of the Ghanaian parliament due to roused concerns related to the cost of construction. The facility is estimated to cost the nation close to $1 billion, a staggering figure which will apparently stand as the largest single investment ever to be committed to development in the Northern sector of Ghana yet. The gigantic project is expected to be completed within 4 or 5 years.
The Pwalugu dam will envelop a hydroelectric power production station, equipped with two massive turbines of 60 MW installed capacity and a 16.5 MW of firm continuous output respectively. The project will look to include an irrigation supply scheme which will benefit over 15,000 people , enhancing the potential of local agriculture in a region that is largely influenced by climatic conditions. The Government aims to provide several canal links and a 12 m high weir, on about 25,000 Ha of land. The construction of a photovoltaic solar power plant to back the dam is noteworthy. A 50 MW capacity solar-powered plant will be developed to complement the hydroelectric power plant , while uniformly contributing to stability and reliability of the national grid.
