In 1971, Soviet engineers built a large gas crater in Turkmenistan. They intended to conduct routine experiments with the gas crater, setting it on fire and expecting it to burn out within a day or two. However, to their surprise, the fire they ignited in the gas crater is still burning today, even after 52 years. They named the site the "Door to Hell" and now it has become a popular tourist destination.
