China 'failed' to sway Taiwan's election despite bullying

Strategic Analysis Australia Director Peter Jennings says China "failed" to sway Taiwan's election as the country elected the pro-Sovereignty candidate William Lai to be their next president.

"The first thing it means is that years of Chinese bullying of stepped-up military exercises around Taiwan has failed," he told Sharri Markson.

"In fact all China is doing, all Xi Jinping is doing, is actually strengthening Taiwanese support support for the belief that they're a democracy and they don’t want to be run by a communist party.

"So the election certainly raises the stakes.

"It’s a return for the third time of the DPP government in Taipei they're not going to declare independence but nor have they the least interest in wanting to come back under the control of the Chinese Communist Party."
