Hi guys, my name’s Charlotte, and this is the story of how my family had hidden this strange secret about me for most of my life. When I found out, I just couldn’t believe it!

You see, I’ve always been a bit of a black sheep in my family. My parents’ dream for me was to get married, start a family, be a good wife to my husband. But I wasn’t up for it⁠—I wanted to go to a university, I wanted a career. There was this weird feeling that we were strangers, that we spoke different languages. They knew the answer as to why, but it would take some time for me to finally learn this secret.

It all started to unravel when my 16th birthday was coming up. My dad was really old and when he reached 65, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. This one time, I came home from school and he started shouting at me “Get out of my property!” I spent a couple of hours at our neighbors’ until my mom came home. And, because my dad’s illness was getting worse, they started talking about how much of my life he would miss. They even started to talk about arranged marriages like it wasn’t the freaking 21st century!

Then one day, my friend Kaylee showed me this science book she had gotten about DNA and cloning and we were hooked. There was an entire chapter on inherited diseases and testing for them. And then I wondered—could I have inherited Alzheimer’s?

I tried convincing my parents to take the DNA test, but, for some reason, they hated the idea. “No. And I don’t want to hear anymore about it,” said mom. To change the topic, they even started talking about their friends’ kid who was studying to become a doctor and would be a perfect match for me! I was furious and I walked out of the room immediately, but I still managed to hear them whispering, “What if she keeps asking questions? Should we tell her?”

NOW I was REALLY curious, because there really WAS something I could find out with this test!
