Russia has firmly opposed the draft IAEA resolution criticising Iran’s nuclear program, calling the text “very bad and unfair.” Russian envoy Mikhail Ulyanov warns that the resolution could escalate regional tensions just as indirect talks between Iran and the U.S. continue. While the West, including the U.S. and EU, demand Iran’s compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA), they have so far refused to lift sanctions, prompting Tehran to reduce its nuclear commitments legally after Washington’s 2018 withdrawal. With threats of “snapback sanctions” looming, Russia has offered to help ease the crisis by assisting in removing Iran’s excess nuclear material and potentially converting it into fuel—a move Kremlin officials say could defuse the stalemate if Tehran and Washington agree.
