Russia Interested in Afghanistan's Internal security #russiaukrainewar #taliban #talibanafghanistan
Russia signs military pact with Taliban. Will its fighters now join the Ukraine war?
This comes a year after Moscow removed the Taliban from a list of proscribed terror groups
After all, North Korea sent thousands of its troops to the front lines of the war in Europe after Pyongyang and Moscow signed their own military pact in June 2024.
Afghanistan has tens of thousands of seasoned fighters who could make quite an impact were they to join Russia’s war against Ukraine.
However, experts are more circumspect.
“Russia cannot expect any significant help from the Taliban – in terms of weapons or troops.
In the absence of any detail on the agreement terms, it is actually hard to say what Russia can get from Afghanistan
The Taliban is currently struggling with rising instability in Afghan northern provinces and cannot fully protect the southern border with Pakistan.
For this reason, Russia’s aid with repair of military equipment or supplies of some outdated weapons would be quite timely.
However, Russia would be unlikely to share sophisticated technologies due to proliferation risks.
“Russia is too economically stretched to provide free military aid to the Taliban government,
Moscow is formalizing engagement with Kabul, trying to shape Afghanistan’s internal security, and positioning itself as the key external power in Central Asia after the US exit.
For India, it is a mixed development—useful if it helps stabilize Afghanistan and restrain ISIS‑K.
The symbolism of the agreement with Russia will allow the Taliban to claim external legitimacy and create a PR moment to influence public opinion domestically
