The male brothel scandal that implicated Queen Victoria and rocked Britain's aristocracy

In July 1889, the Metropolitan Police raided a male brothel on London’s Cleveland Street.

After hours of interrogation, the male prostitutes and procurers that had been captured by police would testify that dozens of prominent aristocrats had frequented the establishment, and soon the discovery would even rock the upper echelons of Victorian Britain.

In fact, implicated in the scandal was Queen Victoria’s own grandson.

Rumours began to swirl that Prince Albert Victor, second-in-line to the British throne, was among the establishment’s patrons.

Although the prince’s name was largely kept out of the domestic press, the American New York Times called the prince a, quote, “stupid perverse boy”, and argued that Albert should never be allowed to ascend the British throne.

The fallout was widespread, and soon the government was accused of a systematic cover-up that obscured and protected the most powerful of those involved.
