Violence against women

Women share something in common; in addition to being women, 6 out of each 10 have suffered from some sort of violence.

It is a worldwide problem that affects us all, both women and men, with no ethnic, economic level differences or countries of origin.

Its severity notwithstanding, and despite the ongoing struggle to eradicate it, this sociocultural issue has been long standing in time.

The United Nations defines violence against women as: “any act of gender-based violence”. It is therefore, a grave and urgent matter that needs to be addressed by public health.

All women are entitled to enjoy a violence-free life; therefore, gender-based violence constitutes a breach of Human Rights and Fundamental Liberties.

Every country has laws aimed at enforcing and guaranteeing the rights of women; nonetheless, this concern is minimized by society.

Women are constantly being subjected to revictimization due to sluggish procedures and by receiving scant assistance.

Violence takes place in every context: work, universities, public spaces and mainly among couples and in the family setting.

Several types of violence are more visible than other, i.e., physical violence; however, psychologic, sexual, or economic violence does exist and even if it cannot be as readily recognized, it is no less serious.

In many cases, the aggressor is close to the victim: a relative, her partner, her boss, or a friend.

We all come from the same place; nevertheless, our sex is determined at the time we are born based on biological characteristics and on whether the newborn is male or female; from then on individual destiny is changed.

For the vast majority, it will be a life full of marked roles, attributes and sociocultural spaces determined for each sex, especially concerning productive and reproductive work assigned to one and the other.

This is why gender equity strives to bring forth equally fair opportunities, rights, and obligations, so that more harmonic and balanced relationships can be endorsed.
1791 – The Declaration of the Rights of Women and of the Female Citizen is published. 1869 – the bases for the suffrage movement are established. 1872 – a woman gains access to a university for the first time. 1903 - Marie Curie becomes the first woman to win the Nobel Prize. 1908 – Textile strikes by women and their death give way to International Women’s Day. 1968 – The UN debate on women’s reproductive rights for the first time. 2004 – The same number is reached of male and female college students. 2017 – Women’s Marches worldwide take place to demand equity.
