WATCH: Officer Fanone describes being beaten before losing consciousness on Jan. 6
Officer Michael Fanone on Tuesday described assisting his fellow officers on the front lines of the Jan. 6 attack in the Capitol.
Fanone, a member of the D.C. Metropolitan Police, testified before a House select committee to investigate the insurrection about the violence he experienced that day, and how the attack has continued to affect him. He recalled that the insurrectionists were wearing military-style clothing, as well as shirts with pro-Trump political slogans, and had taken officers’ shields, which they were using to beat others. At one point Fanone was pulled off the line and violently assaulted from every direction by the attackers. “There were individuals in the crowd whose intention was to kill me,” the officer said, describing how he was struck with a Taser at the base of his skull numerous times before yelling out that he had kids. He said a few insurrectionists stepped in on his behalf at that point, but he was unconscious, and remained so for four minutes.
