7/26/2020 "Biblical Literalism - The Gentile Heresy" Part 2 - Reverend John Shelby Spong
Today’s service is the second of a 2-part series featuring John Shelby Spong. a retired Episcopal Bishop and renowned author and lecturer. The first part was broadcast July 19, 2020 which was his primary message, and this service (7/26/2020) is a “Questions and Answers” session.
Bishop Spong has been a visiting lecturer at Harvard and at universities and churches throughout North America and the English-speaking world. He is recognized as one of the leading voices for liberal Christianity, initiating landmark discussions on controversial topics within the church as an outspoken advocate for change. Bishop Spong is the author of some twenty-five books, including his autobiography “Here I Stand”
Four years ago (4/9/2016) Bishop John Shelby Spong spoke at length at the Abraham Lincoln Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Springfield, Illinois. He spoke about how biblical literalism is based upon a profound misunderstanding of Jesus and the lessons of scripture. This 2-part series repeats that original presentation. The first part (broadcast 7/19/12020) includes Spong’s message and this service (7/26/2020) includes the “Questions and Answers” portion of that appearance.
This service is presented to virtually reach out to everyone connected to the Abraham Lincoln Unitarian Universalist Congregation (ALUUC) of Springfield, Illinois, which remains closed pending mitigation of the Coronavirus Pandemic sweeping the United States and the rest of the world. State and national leaders compel us to “Shelter-in-Place” to prevent the spread of this deadly virus, so the ALUUC has suspended all Sunday services and other in-person gatherings until the Governor of Illinois and health conditions permit otherwise.
NOTE: Apology to listeners. There is a frequent creaking noise throughout this recording caused by the movement of the speaker on a riser that was not setup properly. The noise could not be technically eliminated or minimized from the original recording.
