Three Common Tractor Problems that Can be Fixed in 30 Seconds
I get many tractor and equipment service questions from viewers, and some are way too complicated to resolve over the Internet. There are though, three issues that are easily solved in less than 30 seconds. They're pretty common, even among seasoned tractor people with farm backgrounds. Today we'll talk about these simple problems and their solutions.
The first problem is the front end loader quits working. Usually it will go up or down but won't tilt or curl, or vice versa. This usually occurs after the loader has been taken off and re-installed on the tractor, or the tractor has been used for extreme brush cutting.
What's happened is a hydraulic line has come loose. Many times this is not visually apparent. By checking the hydraulic couplers, there's usually one that is partially unplugged and is restricting the flow of hydraulic oil to one loader function. Finding it and plugging it back in fixes the problem.
The second problem is the three point quits working. Underneath the seat, between the operators ankles, on most tractors, is a knob that controls the rate of the three point hitch raise and lower functions. If an operator, or a kid playing on the tractor, turns the knob all the way in, they've essentially put the 3 point in transport lock. Compounding the problem is the fact that many operators don't know the knob is there, and accidentally turn it when trying to adjust the seat spring tension, which is controlled by a knob in the same area. Once the knob is turned back to allow flow to the three point to resume, the problem is solved.
Finally, I've had multiple people write that they can't get their power take off shaft on, or off. This problem many times occurs because there is a common PTO shaft design with a mechanism that appears to be a release that can be slid forward. It feels like a PTO release and it is spring loaded, but sliding it forward does nothing, no power take off shaft can be attached or removed by moving the collar forward. Instead, pulling a similar collar back releases the PTO attachment and allows the shaft to be put on or taken off with ease.
All of these problems are frustrating, but the good news is, once you know what to look for when you experience these issues, you can easily and quickly repair them and get back to work.
