DIY Peat Moss and Mulch Spreader Landzie style
After moving into our new home this January, I am on a mission to have the best grass in my subdicision. To succeed in having a lush full yard I will need to dethatch, overseed and cover the seed with a thin layer of peat moss. Spreading moss by hand is dirty and tideous. So I went on the hunt for spreaders and soon realized that they are a bit pricy for what they are. Being such a simple tool I thought it would be fun to build my own and guide you guys through this DIY option. ENJOY!!
Based on my use you get about 190sq ft of coverage from one bag 3 cu ft of peat moss.
Here is the video for building the door.

Materials I used
1- 8ft 2x4"
1- 8ft (1"x2" for door build)
(if you have the ability, buy 1 8ft 2x6 and rip a 2" section this will be enough for the agitators and door depending on the width of the cage wire you use)
5/8 MDF
4- PVC 90°elbows 1 1/2"
1- PVC pipe 10ft
1 roll of cage wire 1" x 1 1/2" plug
t 50 staples
25 ct- 2-1/2" wood screws.
Step by Step
-Cut 2 20 inch diameter circles from mdf
-Cut 2x4 into section to accomodate the correct width these will be you supports/ aggitators. The width should be based on the total width of the cage wire you purchase. remember to subtract the width of your 2 discs, as you want the wire to line up with the outside edges.
-divide circle into 3rds and install aggitators/ supports.
- staple on cage wire leave a couple of inches of overlap
- cut holes for and install axle/ handle
-Watch next video for the door build
There can be many Variations to the materials you use. Some of this is just what I happened to have on hand. The Circles for the Drum could also be made out of plywood. The cage wire could also be purchased in 1/2"x1/2" plug which I believe would sift better, but possibly provide less coverage. The supports/ aggitators could change in material size as well, as long you can cut them to the correct length.
