Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) commonly used to reduce stomach acid production.
1. Headache: Some people may experience mild to moderate headaches while taking omeprazole. This side effect is usually temporary and subsides with continued use.
2. Diarrhea or constipation: Omeprazole can affect bowel movements, leading to either diarrhea or constipation in some individuals. It's important to maintain proper hydration and dietary fiber intake to manage these symptoms.
3. Stomach pain or discomfort: Omeprazole can occasionally cause abdominal pain or discomfort. If severe or persistent, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional.
4. Nausea and vomiting: Some individuals may experience mild nausea or, rarely, vomiting while taking omeprazole. Taking the medication with food can help alleviate these symptoms.
5. Increased risk of certain infections: Long-term use of omeprazole and other PPIs may slightly increase the risk of gastrointestinal infections, such as Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) infection and pneumonia.
6. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies: Prolonged use of omeprazole can interfere with the absorption of certain nutrients, such as vitamin B12, calcium, magnesium, and iron.
