I Get Along Without You Very Well - Rodrigo Rodrigues - Fake Standards

"I Get Along Without You Very Well" is a standard composed by Hoagy Carmichael in 1938, with lyrics based on a poem written by Jane (Brown) Thompson in 1924, "Except Sometimes". Thompson's identity as the author of the poem was for many years unknown; she died the night before the song was introduced on radio by Dick Powell. In Carmichael’s 2003 biography, Stardust Melody: The Life and Music of Hoagy Carmichael, author Richard M. Sudhalter recounts the story as it’s come down to us. A friend of the composer’s had seen the poem in the old Life Magazine and, thinking Carmichael would like it, had clipped it out and passed it along. Carmichael forgot about it until (as Sudhalter says) “in 1938 it again fell under his gaze.”
“Fake Standards”, de Rodrigo Rodrigues, lançado dois anos depois do seu falecimento, mais precisamente em 2007, pelo selo Dubas Brasil, em que ele interpreta, de forma única, clássicos americanos. O disco foi gravado em 2001, no estúdio do seu companheiro de Música Ligeira, Mário Manga, e durante 6 anos as gravações ficaram guardadas.

I get along without you very well,
Of course I do,
Except when soft rains fall
And drip from leaves, then I recall
The thrill of being sheltered in your arms.
Of course, I do.
But I get along without you very well.

I’ve forgotten you just like I should,
Of course I have,
Except to hear your name,
Or someone’s laugh that is the same,
But I’ve forgotten you just like I should.

What a guy, what a fool am I.
To think my breaking heart could kid the moon.
What’s in store? Should I phone once more?
No, it’s best that I stick to my tune.

I get along without you very well,
Of course I do.
Except perhaps in spring.
But I should never think of spring,
For that would surely break my heart in two.
Poem Except Sometimes

I get along without you very well,
Of course I do.
Except the times a soft rain falls,
And dripping off the trees recalls
How you and I stood deep in mist
One day far in the woods, and kissed.
But now I get along without you — well,
Of course I do.

I really have forgotten you, I boast,
Of course I have.
Except when somone sings a strain
Of song, then you are here again;
Or laughs a way which is the same
As yours; or when I hear your name.
I really have forgotten you — almost.
Of course I have.
