For years, we have been conditioned as viewers to understand an important aspect in storytelling: The central conflict usually remains at the center until the end of the story. The Lord of The Rings, for example, is the story of Frodo Baggins, a young hobbit who must take the one ring and destroy in in the fires of Mount Doom. In Breaking Bad, Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher turns to a life of crime to make and distribute crystal meth on the streets to make sure his family is financially secure after he is diagnosed with lung cancer. In both of these stories, this is the conflict that stays at the center for the entire duration of the narrative. It’s what you say when people ask what that story is about. Game of Thrones is a little harder to explain. For the first three seasons, the show was divided into three major plotlines: The War of the Five Kings, Dany’s storyline as she builds an army on Essos and the Night’s Watch plot. But Westeros’ medieval war was the primary storyline for these first few seasons and at the center of it lay the main conflict of the show: Starks vs. Lannisters. Game of Thrones fans know exactly why Season Three’s penultimate episode The Rains of Castamere is so important. Today we’ll explore the significance and legacy of the episode.
